DT RAS Table

There aren’t a lot of top NFL Defensive Tackles at the top of this list, though a large number of great interior rushers posted great RAS. One name you might not recognize off the top of your head is Joe Anoa’i. The former defensive tackle didn’t do anything notable in the NFL, but a guy who could post a 9.95 RAS at DT would join the WWE as Roman Reigns. I hear he’s done alright by himself there.

  1. Height is a positive trait in RAS but a negative trait on the field at the DT position, which is probably why the top RAS DTs were not good players. (Well, Olshansky was a good player, but he played DE in a 3-4, which puts him on the end of the line of scrimmage and head-up on offensive tackles, both factors that make height less of a negative). The ideal height for a DT is 6-1 or 6-2, and anything over 6-3 is counterproductive, because you’re not going to be able to get under the average guard consistently if you’re as tall as or taller than he is.

    1. Depending on the scheme, maybe. Teams have traditionally hated shorter defensive tackles, which is why Aaron Donald didn’t go higher and why Grady Jarrett somehow slipped to the mid rounds despite ridiculous tape (Geno Atkins for a slightly older example). I’d like to see that changing, but teams still seem oblivious to it.

That said, for RAS it’s mainly meant as a counterbalance. Size makes it more difficult, in general, for athletic testing. It affects your balance, your movement ability, range of motion, a ton of things. So in theory, a larger player would have a harder time performing many of the athletic drills, thus making the higher score for height counter somewhat expected lower scores elsewhere, and it stands out even more when a larger player still crushes drills.

      1. There’s no scheme in which having DTs with higher centers of gravity is a benefit. There’s no scheme in which providing offensive lineman a longer target to latch onto is a benefit. There’s no scheme in which making it harder to get under opposing lineman is outweighed by some benefit of height.

Teams have traditionally accepted 3-and-outs in the name of “establishing the run,” prioritized athleticism (both in the general sense and in the how-far-can-he-throw-from-his-knees sense) over skill and intelligence at QB, and punted on 4th and short at the 40. Sometimes conventional wisdom is just plain wrong. Tall defensive tackles are definitely one of those cases.
